Scenario: Stopped along the side of a farm road, set my Nikon D7000 to take three bracketed shots. First underexposed by 2 stops, a neutral photo and then an overexposed photo by 2 stops.
Used Affinity Photo’s “New HDR Merge” feature to combine the images into one image and chose the “dramatic” preset:
My lens had not been cleaned in some time; hence all the spots noticeable in the sky.
Continuing in Affinity Photo (awesome Photoshop alternative IMO), I removed distracting elements as best I could (a time-consuming process) to come up with a final HDR image:
